Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
📍 Londorossi Gate (2,100m) → Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m)
Your journey begins at the Londorossi Gate, where you’ll complete park registration. The trail winds through pristine montane forest, with towering trees and abundant birdlife. The path is gentle and shaded, making for a pleasant introduction to the mountain. You’ll reach Mti Mkubwa Camp (“Big Tree Camp”) in the afternoon, surrounded by giant forest trees.
Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
📍 Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m) → Shira 1 Camp (3,505m)
The trail climbs steadily out of the forest and onto the Shira Plateau. The vegetation changes dramatically, with giant groundsels and lobelias appearing. You’ll be rewarded with your first views of Mount Meru and the expansive Shira Plateau. Shira 1 Camp is set on the plateau with incredible views of Kibo Peak in the distance.
Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
📍 Shira 1 Camp (3,505m) → Shira 2 Camp (3,850m)
A shorter day that allows for excellent acclimatization. You’ll continue across the Shira Plateau, enjoying the unique alpine vegetation and stunning views of Kibo Peak. The trail is relatively flat and offers plenty of opportunities to take in the scenery. Shira 2 Camp is a beautiful campsite with panoramic views of the plateau and the summit.
Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp
📍 Shira 2 Camp (3,850m) → Barranco Camp (3,960m)
A long and varied day. You’ll traverse the Shira Plateau, climb to Lava Tower (4,630m) for excellent acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy is crucial for summit success. The views of Kibo Peak from the Barranco Valley are breathtaking. You’ll also get your first look at the famous Barranco Wall.
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
📍 Barranco Camp (3,960m) → Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Today you’ll conquer the Barranco Wall — a steep but non-technical scramble that’s one of the highlights of the Lemosho route. It’s an exhilarating climb with spectacular views from the top. After the wall, you’ll traverse the alpine desert to Karanga Camp. This shorter day allows for extra acclimatization and rest.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
📍 Karanga Camp (4,035m) → Barafu Camp (4,640m)
A short but steep ascent to Barafu Camp, your final stop before the summit. The camp sits on a rocky ridge with dramatic views of the summit. You’ll arrive early afternoon, giving you plenty of time to rest, hydrate, and prepare for the summit attempt. Your guides will brief you on the night ahead.
Barafu Camp → Summit → Mweka Camp
📍 Barafu Camp (4,640m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Summit day! You’ll wake around midnight and begin the steep ascent to Stella Point on the crater rim. The climb is challenging, switchbacking up scree slopes in the dark. After reaching Stella Point, you’ll continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak — the Roof of Africa! After celebrating and taking photos, you’ll descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp through the rainforest.
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
📍 Mweka Camp (3,100m) → Mweka Gate (1,650m)
Your final day is a descent through the lush rainforest. The trail can be slippery and muddy, but it’s a joyful walk celebrating your achievement. At the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate and enjoy a well-deserved celebration with your team.
