Day 1

Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

Distance: 8 km Walking Time: 4โ€“5 hours Elevation Gain: +650m Habitat: Montane Forest

Your journey begins at the Rongai Gate on the northern side of Kilimanjaro. This is the only route that approaches from the north, offering a unique perspective of the mountain. The trail starts through farmland and then enters the montane forest. The path is gentle and less crowded than the southern routes. You’ll reach Simba Camp in the afternoon, surrounded by forest.

Day 2

Simba Camp to Kikelewa Camp

The trail continues through the forest and emerges into moorland. The vegetation changes dramatically, with giant groundsels and lobelias appearing. You’ll have views of the Kibo massif ahead. Kikelewa Camp is nestled in a beautiful valley with views of the summit. This is a good acclimatization day.

Day 3

Kikelewa Camp to Second Cave Camp

Distance: 6 km Walking Time: 4โ€“5 hours Elevation Gain: -150m (with ups and downs) Habitat: Moorland / Alpine Desert

A relatively gentle day that allows for good acclimatization. The trail climbs steadily through the moorland, with increasingly dramatic views of Kibo Peak. You’ll pass through the Third Cave before reaching Second Cave Camp, a peaceful campsite with views of the summit. The shorter day allows for extra rest.

Day 4

Second Cave Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

A steady climb to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, situated beneath the dramatic Mawenzi Peak. The landscape becomes increasingly lunar, with rocky terrain and stunning views. Mawenzi Tarn is a beautiful glacial lake with views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. This is a spectacular campsite and your final stop before the summit.

Day 5

Mawenzi Tarn Camp โ€” Acclimatization Day

Distance: 4 km Walking Time: 2โ€“3 hours Elevation Gain: +300m (then return) Habitat: Alpine Desert

Today is a critical acclimatization day. You’ll take a scenic hike up to Mawenzi Ridge (4,600m), offering spectacular views of the Kibo massif and the surrounding landscape. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adjust to the altitude, significantly improving your chances of summit success. The views from the ridge are breathtaking.

Day 6

Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut

Today you’ll traverse the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape is lunar and barren, with stunning views of both peaks. You’ll arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon, where you’ll rest, eat an early dinner, and prepare for the summit attempt. Your guides will brief you on the night ahead.

Day 7

Kibo Hut โ†’ Summit โ†’ Horombo Hut

Distance: 9 km (up) + 14 km (down) Walking Time: 6โ€“8 hours up, 4โ€“5 hours down Elevation Gain: +1,192m to peak Habitat: Alpine Desert / Ice Cap

Summit day! You’ll wake around midnight and begin the steep ascent to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. The climb is challenging, switchbacking up scree slopes. After reaching Gilman’s Point, you’ll continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak โ€” the Roof of Africa! After celebrating and taking photos, you’ll descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut.

Day 8

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

The final descent takes you back through the moorland and into the lush forest. It’s a long but rewarding walk, celebrating your achievement. At the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate and enjoy a well-deserved celebration with your team.
