Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp
๐ Umbwe Gate (1,800m) โ Umbwe Camp (2,800m)
Your journey begins at the Umbwe Gate, the start of the steepest route on Kilimanjaro. The trail immediately begins climbing steeply through dense montane forest. The path is narrow, steep, and often slippery, but the forest is beautiful and alive with birdlife. You’ll reach Umbwe Camp in the afternoon, tired but rewarded with views of the forest canopy.
Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp
๐ Umbwe Camp (2,800m) โ Barranco Camp (3,960m)
Another steep day as you climb out of the forest and into the moorland zone. The vegetation changes dramatically, with giant groundsels and lobelias appearing. The views of Kibo Peak become increasingly dramatic as you climb. You’ll reach Barranco Camp in the afternoon, nestled in the beautiful Barranco Valley with views of the summit.
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
๐ Barranco Camp (3,960m) โ Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Today you’ll conquer the Barranco Wall โ a steep but non-technical scramble that’s one of the highlights of the Umbwe route. It’s an exhilarating climb with spectacular views from the top. After the wall, you’ll traverse the alpine desert to Karanga Camp. This shorter day allows for rest and acclimatization.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
๐ Karanga Camp (4,035m) โ Barafu Camp (4,640m)
A short but steep ascent to Barafu Camp, your final stop before the summit. The camp sits on a rocky ridge with dramatic views of the summit. You’ll arrive early afternoon, giving you plenty of time to rest, hydrate, and prepare for the summit attempt. Your guides will brief you on the night ahead.
Barafu Camp โ Summit โ Mweka Camp
๐ Barafu Camp (4,640m) โ Uhuru Peak (5,895m) โ Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Summit day! You’ll wake around midnight and begin the steep ascent to Stella Point on the crater rim. The climb is extremely challenging, with steep switchbacks on scree slopes in the dark. After reaching Stella Point, you’ll continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak โ the Roof of Africa! After celebrating and taking photos, you’ll descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp through the rainforest.
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
๐ Mweka Camp (3,100m) โ Mweka Gate (1,650m)
Your final day is a descent through the lush rainforest. The trail can be slippery and muddy, but it’s a joyful walk celebrating your achievement. At the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate and enjoy a well-deserved celebration with your team.
