The Endless Plains
The Serengeti is Tanzania’s oldest and most famous national park — a vast savannah stretching nearly 15,000 square kilometres across the northern part of the country. Its name comes from the Maasai word “siringet,” meaning “endless plains,” and that’s exactly what it feels like when you’re standing in the middle of it.
The Serengeti is best known for the Great Migration, the largest land mammal migration on Earth. Every year, over 1.5 million wildebeest, 250,000 zebras, and hundreds of thousands of gazelles move in a continuous loop between the Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara, following the rains and the fresh grass.
But the Serengeti isn’t just about the migration. It’s home to the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino — along with cheetahs, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, and over 500 species of birds. Whatever time of year you visit, there’s always something extraordinary to see.
