Tanzania Safari Overview

The Serengeti is the heart of the Tanzanian safari. Its endless plains host the Great Migration — over 1.5 million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles moving in a continuous cycle — along with resident predators including lions, cheetahs, and leopards.

Game viewing is exceptional year-round, with different areas of the park offering the best sightings depending on the season.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. Its floor is a self-contained ecosystem teeming with wildlife — including the rare black rhino, large lion prides, elephants, and flamingos on Lake Magadi.

Because of its enclosed nature, wildlife viewing here is almost guaranteed, making it a highlight of any Northern Circuit itinerary.

Famous for its massive elephant herds and iconic baobab trees, Tarangire is often visited on the way to or from the Serengeti. During the dry season, the Tarangire River draws dense concentrations of wildlife, making it one of the best parks for elephant sightings in East Africa.

Compact but diverse, Lake Manyara packs a surprising range of habitats into a small area — groundwater forest, open grassland, and a shallow alkaline lake. It’s best known for its tree-climbing lions and huge flocks of flamingos along the lakeshore.

Ruaha is Tanzania’s largest national park and one of its most dramatic. It supports an enormous elephant population, healthy predator numbers, and over 570 bird species. Because visitor numbers are low, sightings feel private and authentic.

Formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere is one of the largest protected areas in the world. Its rivers and lakes make it ideal for boat safaris and walking safaris — a completely different rhythm from the traditional game drive.
