Best Time for Safari

January marks the start of calving season on the southern Serengeti plains. Over 500,000 wildebeest give birth within a few weeks, drawing dense concentrations of predators — lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and wild dogs.

The short rains have ended, leaving green plains and excellent visibility. It’s one of the most dramatic times to be in the Serengeti, and crowds reflect that.

February is the peak of calving season. The southern Serengeti and Ndutu area are packed with newborn wildebeest and the predators that follow them. Cheetah sightings are particularly strong during this window.

Weather is warm and mostly dry, with occasional afternoon showers. Like January, this is high season — expect premium pricing.

March is a transition month. The long rains begin, usually as afternoon or evening showers rather than all-day rain. The plains are green and wildlife is still abundant, though the migration begins moving north and west.

Crowds drop sharply, and prices follow. For travelers who don’t mind occasional rain, March offers excellent value and a lush, uncrowded safari experience.

April is the wettest month of the year in Tanzania. Many tented camps in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro close for the season, and some roads become impassable. Wildlife viewing continues, but the experience is wetter and less predictable.

That said, April offers the lowest prices of the year and a genuinely quiet, exclusive safari. It’s best for returning safari-goers or travelers who value solitude over guaranteed sightings.

May is the tail end of the long rains. Conditions improve steadily throughout the month, and by late May the dry season is beginning to take hold. The vegetation is still thick, which can make wildlife spotting harder, but the parks are quiet and affordable.

The migration begins its northward movement, and the western Serengeti starts to fill with herds. It’s a transitional month — good value, but not peak game viewing.

June is the start of the long dry season and one of the best months for safari. Vegetation thins out, water sources shrink, and wildlife concentrates around remaining water — making animals far easier to find.

The migration moves into the western and central Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro Crater offers excellent viewing. Crowds are moderate compared to July and August.

July is peak safari season. The Great Migration reaches the Grumeti and Mara Rivers in the northern Serengeti, and the dramatic river crossings begin. Wildlife viewing across the Northern Circuit is outstanding.

Dry conditions, clear skies, and concentrated wildlife make this one of the most rewarding months — but also one of the busiest and most expensive. Book months in advance.

August is the most popular month for Tanzania safaris. The Great Migration is in the northern Serengeti, and the Mara River crossings are at their most dramatic. Wildlife viewing is exceptional across the entire Northern Circuit.

The trade-off is crowds and cost. Every major camp and lodge is full, and prices are at their annual peak. If you want August, book at least 6–9 months ahead.

September rivals August for game viewing. The migration is still in the northern Serengeti, and river crossings continue. Conditions are dry and clear, and wildlife remains highly concentrated.

Crowds begin to thin slightly toward the end of the month, and prices soften a little. Many safari veterans consider September the single best month for a Tanzania safari.

October is a sweet spot. The dry season is still in full effect, wildlife viewing remains excellent, and crowds are noticeably lighter than July through September. The migration begins its southward return, and the northern Serengeti starts to empty out.

This is one of the best months for travelers who want peak-quality game viewing without peak-season crowds and prices.

November marks the short rains — typically brief afternoon showers rather than sustained rain. The parks are green, quiet, and affordable. Wildlife viewing is still good, especially in the central and southern Serengeti as the migration moves back down.

For travelers who want a private, green-season safari at a lower price, November is one of the best-value months of the year.

December is a return to excellent safari conditions. The short rains have ended, the plains are green, and the migration is settling into the southern Serengeti ahead of calving season. Predator activity picks up as herds gather.

The month is popular with holiday travelers, especially around Christmas and New Year. Book early if you plan to travel during the festive period.
