Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania’s smallest and most beautiful parks, tucked into the base of the dramatic Great Rift Valley escarpment. Despite its compact size, it packs in an extraordinary variety of landscapes — from groundwater forest and open woodland to grassy plains and the shimmering alkaline lake itself.

The park is best known for two things: its tree-climbing lions and its vast flocks of flamingos. The lions here have developed the unusual habit of resting in the branches of acacia trees — a behaviour rarely seen elsewhere in Africa. Meanwhile, the shallow waters of Lake Manyara attract thousands of flamingos, along with pelicans, storks, and over 400 other bird species.

Lake Manyara is also the perfect short stop on a Northern Circuit safari. Its proximity to Arusha, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire makes it an easy and rewarding addition to any itinerary — especially for travelers who want a taste of Tanzania’s incredible birdlife and scenery.

Tree-Climbing Lions

Lake Manyara is one of only two places in Africa where lions regularly climb trees. Seeing a pride draped across the branches is a rare and unforgettable sight.

Lake Manyara is a year-round destination, but the seasons shape what you’ll see.

Best

June – October

The dry season. Wildlife concentrates around water sources, and game viewing is at its best. The escarpment views are clearest during these months.

Good

December – February

The short dry season. Lush green landscapes, excellent birdlife, and fewer crowds. A beautiful time to visit, especially for photographers.

Green

April – May

The long rainy season. Lush and green with fewer tourists and lower prices. Some roads may be muddy, but the birdlife is exceptional.

Shoulder

November

The short rainy season. Brief afternoon showers, quiet plains, and excellent bird watching. A good budget option with fewer vehicles.
