Ngorongoro Crater

The Eighth Wonder of the World

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera โ€” a vast, bowl-shaped depression roughly 19 kilometres across and 600 metres deep. It was formed when a massive volcano collapsed on itself around two to three million years ago, leaving behind the stunning natural amphitheatre we see today.

Inside the crater, an extraordinary concentration of wildlife lives year-round. Because the walls act as a natural enclosure, animals rarely leave โ€” making the Ngorongoro one of the best places in Africa to see the Big Five in a single day. It’s also one of the last places in Tanzania where you have a realistic chance of spotting the critically endangered black rhino.

The crater is part of the larger Ngorongoro Conservation Area โ€” a UNESCO World Heritage Site where wildlife and Maasai pastoralists coexist. It’s a place of both ecological and cultural significance, and it’s one of the most unforgettable safari destinations on the planet.

June โ€“ October

The dry season. Grass is shorter, visibility is better, and wildlife concentrates around water sources. This is the best time for game viewing and photography.

Great

December โ€“ March

The short dry season. Lush green landscapes, newborn animals, and excellent birdlife. Fewer crowds than the peak season and beautiful light.

Green

April โ€“ May

The long rainy season. Lush and green, fewer tourists, and lower prices. Wildlife viewing is still good, but some roads can be muddy.

Shoulder

November

The short rainy season. Brief afternoon showers, quiet plains, and excellent bird watching. A good budget option with fewer vehicles.
