Tarangire National Park sits in the northern part of Tanzania, just a short drive from Arusha. It’s named after the Tarangire River, which flows through the park and serves as the lifeline for wildlife during the dry season. During the dry months, huge numbers of animals migrate into the park from the surrounding areas — and no animal is more iconic here than the elephant.

Tarangire is famous for its enormous elephant herds. In the dry season, it’s not unusual to see groups of 200 or more elephants gathered along the riverbanks. The park has one of the highest elephant densities in Tanzania, and the sight of so many of these gentle giants in one place is genuinely unforgettable.

Beyond elephants, Tarangire is known for its striking landscape — dotted with ancient baobab trees that look like they belong on another planet. It’s a quieter, less-visited park than the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, which makes it perfect for travelers who want a more peaceful safari experience, especially for a day trip from Arusha.

Tarangire is a year-round destination, but the dry season is by far the best time to see its famous elephant herds.

The dry season. Wildlife concentrates along the Tarangire River, including the park’s famous elephant herds. Game viewing is at its absolute best.

December – March

The short dry season. Lush green landscapes, excellent birdlife, and newborn animals. Fewer crowds and beautiful light for photography.

Green

April – May

The long rainy season. Lush and green with fewer tourists and lower prices. Wildlife is more dispersed and some roads may be muddy.

Shoulder

November

The short rainy season. Brief afternoon showers, quiet plains, and excellent bird watching. A good budget option.
