Kilimanjaro Packing List
Comprehensive gear list including essential layers, rental options, and sleeping bag requirements. Everything you need to pack for a successful summit.
Packing for Kilimanjaro is different from packing for any other trek. You’ll pass through five distinct climate zones โ from tropical rainforest at the base to arctic conditions at the summit. Temperatures can swing from 25ยฐC during the day to -15ยฐC at night on the summit push.
This guide covers everything you need, organised by category with notes on what’s essential, what’s recommended, and what you can rent locally. By the end, you’ll have a complete checklist and know exactly what to bring.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does my bag weigh?
Your duffel bag carried by porters should weigh no more than 15kg. Your daypack, which you carry, should weigh no more than 5โ7kg. Weigh your bag before you leave home to avoid repacking at the trailhead.
Can I rent gear in Tanzania?
Yes. Most reputable operators in Moshi and Arusha offer rental gear including sleeping bags, down jackets, trekking poles, and waterproof trousers. Quality varies โ inspect everything before you commit.
What sleeping bag rating do I need?
A sleeping bag rated to -10ยฐC (14ยฐF) or lower is essential. Four-season down bags are best. If you sleep cold, consider a -15ยฐC bag. A silk or fleece liner adds 5โ10ยฐC of warmth.
Do I need hiking boots or can I wear trail runners?
Waterproof hiking boots are strongly recommended. Trail runners don’t provide enough ankle support or warmth for the summit push. If you wear trail runners, you’ll need insulated boots for summit night.
How many litres should my daypack be?
A 30โ40L daypack is ideal. It needs to hold 2โ3L of water, snacks, extra layers, rain gear, camera, and personal items. Anything smaller will be uncomfortable; anything larger will be too heavy.
What about laundry?
There are no laundry facilities on the mountain. Bring enough base layers and socks for the full trek. Merino wool resists odour better than synthetic, so you can wear it multiple days.
Do I need a water filter?
Your operator should provide purified water. If you’re unsure, bring purification tablets or a filtration bottle as backup. Never drink untreated water from streams on the mountain.
