Londorossi Gate โ Mti Mkubwa Camp
๐ Londorossi Gate (2,100m) โ Mti Mkubwa (2,750m)
After registration at Londorossi Gate, you’ll drive through the forest to the trailhead. The hike begins with a gentle ascent through pristine rainforest, crossing small streams and listening to colobus monkeys. The trail is wellโmarked and leads to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp, nestled in the forest edge, where you’ll spend the first night.
Mti Mkubwa โ Shira 2 Camp
๐ Mti Mkubwa (2,750m) โ Shira 2 Camp (3,850m)
The trail ascends out of the forest and into open moorland, with panoramic views of the Shira Plateau. You’ll pass giant groundsels and lobelias as the landscape becomes more alpine. Shira 2 Camp is situated on the plateau itself, offering stunning views of Mount Meru to the east and the plains far below.
Shira 2 โ Lava Tower โ Barranco Camp
๐ Shira 2 (3,850m) โ Barranco Camp (3,950m) via Lava Tower (4,630m)
Today you cross the Shira Plateau, heading towards the Lava Tower (4,630m) for a “climb high, sleep low” acclimatisation strategy. After lunch near the tower, you descend into the Great Barranco Valley, arriving at Barranco Camp beneath the imposing Great Barranco Wall. The views of Kibo’s glaciers are unforgettable.
Barranco Camp โ Barafu Camp
๐ Barranco Camp (3,950m) โ Barafu Camp (4,680m)
Today you tackle the Great Barranco Wall โ a steep but nonโtechnical scramble that rewards you with breathtaking views of the Heim Glacier. After the wall, the trail continues across the Karanga Valley and ascends to Barafu Camp, the base for your summit attempt. Barafu Camp sits on a rocky ridge with stunning views of the summit and the surrounding plains.
Barafu Camp โ SUMMIT โ Mweka Camp
๐ Barafu Camp (4,680m) โ Uhuru Peak (5,895m) โ Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Summit day! You’ll wake around midnight and begin the steep ascent towards the crater rim. The trail is rocky and steep, but the sunrise from Uhuru Peak makes every step worth it. After celebrating at the Roof of Africa, you descend the Mweka Route to Mweka Camp, dropping through all vegetation zones.
Mweka Camp โ Mweka Gate
๐ Mweka Camp (3,100m) โ Mweka Gate (1,650m)
Your final descent through the lush rainforest. The trail is often muddy and slippery, but the joy of completing the Lemosho Route keeps spirits high. At Mweka Gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate and enjoy a celebration with your crew.
