Distance: 8 km Walking Time: 3–4 hours Elevation Gain: +840m Habitat: Montane Forest

Your adventure begins at the Marangu Gate, where you’ll register with the park authorities. The trail winds through lush montane forest, offering glimpses of colobus monkeys and exotic birds. The forest is dense and alive with the sounds of nature. You’ll reach Mandara Hut in the afternoon, where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful forest surroundings.

🌟 Highlight: Optional hike to the Maundi Crater for a stunning view of Lake Chala and the Kenyan plains.
Day 2

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

📍 Mandara Hut (2,700m) → Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Distance: 12 km Walking Time: 5–6 hours Elevation Gain: +1,020m Habitat: Heath / Moorland

The trail leaves the forest behind and enters the heath and moorland zone. The landscape opens up dramatically, with giant groundsels and lobelias dotting the terrain. You’ll get your first real views of the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Horombo Hut is a bustling hub with stunning views of the summit.

🌟 Highlight: First clear views of Kibo Peak and the dramatic Mawenzi Peak.
Day 3

Horombo Hut — Acclimatization Day

Distance: 6 km Walking Time: 2–3 hours Elevation Gain: +280m (then return) Habitat: Moorland / Alpine Desert

Today is a critical acclimatization day. You’ll take a short hike up to Zebra Rocks (4,000m), a distinctive black-and-white striped rock formation. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adjust to the altitude, significantly improving your chances of summit success. The views of Kibo Peak from here are spectacular.

🌟 Highlight: Acclimatization hike to Zebra Rocks with stunning views of Kibo Peak.
Day 4

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

📍 Horombo Hut (3,720m) → Kibo Hut (4,703m)

Distance: 10 km Walking Time: 5–6 hours Elevation Gain: +983m Habitat: Alpine Desert

Today you cross the “Saddle” — the lunar-like desert between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The terrain is rocky and barren, with stunning views of both peaks. You’ll arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon, where you’ll rest, eat an early dinner, and prepare for the summit attempt.

🌟 Highlight: Crossing the Saddle with epic views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.
Day 5

Kibo Hut → Summit → Horombo Hut

📍 Kibo Hut (4,703m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Distance: 14 km (up) + 10 km (down) Walking Time: 6–8 hours up, 4–5 hours down Elevation Gain: +1,192m to peak Habitat: Alpine Desert / Ice Cap

Summit day! You’ll wake around midnight and begin the steep ascent to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. The climb is challenging, switchbacking up scree slopes. After reaching Gilman’s Point, you’ll continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak — the Roof of Africa! After celebrating and taking photos, you’ll descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut.

🌟 Highlight: Standing at Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa — watching the sunrise over the continent.
