Your journey begins at the Umbwe Gate on the southern side of Kilimanjaro. The trail immediately begins climbing steeply through dense montane forest along a ridge between two deep valleys. The path is narrow, steep, and often muddy, but the forest is beautiful and alive with birdlife. On clear days, you’ll catch glimpses of the summit towering above. You’ll reach Umbwe Cave Camp in the afternoon, tired but rewarded with views of the forest canopy.
