Day 1

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Distance: 11 km Walking Time: 5โ€“6 hours Elevation Gain: +1,200m Habitat: Montane Forest

Your adventure begins at the Machame Gate, where you’ll register with the park authorities. The trail starts through lush rainforest, where you may spot colobus monkeys and a variety of bird species. The path is steep and muddy at times, but the dense forest provides shade. You’ll reach Machame Camp in the afternoon, where you’ll spend your first night under the stars.

Day 2

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Distance: 5 km Walking Time: 4โ€“5 hours Elevation Gain: +840m Habitat: Moorland

The trail leaves the forest and enters the open moorland. The vegetation changes dramatically, with giant groundsels and lobelias dotting the landscape. You’ll have spectacular views of the Shira Plateau, an ancient volcanic caldera. The weather is often cool and breezy. Shira Camp offers stunning views of Mount Meru in the distance.

Day 3

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp

Distance: 10 km Walking Time: 6โ€“7 hours Elevation Gain: +120m (with significant ups and downs) Habitat: Alpine Desert

A long but rewarding day. You’ll climb to Lava Tower (4,630m) for excellent acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy is key to successful summit bids. The views of Kibo Peak from the Barranco Valley are breathtaking. You’ll also see the famous Barranco Wall, which you’ll tackle tomorrow.

Day 4

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Distance: 5 km Walking Time: 3โ€“4 hours Elevation Gain: +75m Habitat: Alpine Desert

Today you’ll conquer the Barranco Wall โ€” a steep but non-technical scramble that’s one of the highlights of the Machame route. It’s a fun and exhilarating climb with spectacular views. After reaching the top, you’ll traverse the alpine desert to Karanga Camp. This shorter day allows for more acclimatization and rest.

Day 5

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Distance: 4 km Walking Time: 3โ€“4 hours Elevation Gain: +605m Habitat: Alpine Desert

A short but steep ascent to Barafu Camp, your final stop before the summit. The camp sits on a rocky ridge with dramatic views of the summit. You’ll arrive early afternoon, giving you plenty of time to rest, hydrate, and prepare for the summit attempt. Your guides will brief you on the night ahead.

Day 6

Barafu Camp โ†’ Summit โ†’ Mweka Camp

๐Ÿ“ Barafu Camp (4,640m) โ†’ Uhuru Peak (5,895m) โ†’ Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Distance: 9 km (up) + 15 km (down) Walking Time: 6โ€“8 hours up, 4โ€“6 hours down Elevation Gain: +1,255m to peak Habitat: Alpine Desert / Ice Cap

Summit day! You’ll wake around midnight and begin the steep ascent to Stella Point on the crater rim. The climb is challenging, switchbacking up scree slopes in the dark. After reaching Stella Point, you’ll continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak โ€” the Roof of Africa! After celebrating and taking photos, you’ll descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp through the rainforest.

Day 7

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Your final day is a descent through the lush rainforest. The trail can be slippery and muddy, but it’s a joyful walk celebrating your achievement. At the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate and enjoy a well-deserved celebration with your team.
