Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

Your adventure begins at Momella Gate, where you’ll meet your armed ranger guide (mandatory for all Meru treks). The trail winds through open grassland and montane forest, with excellent chances to spot giraffes, zebras, buffalo, and colobus monkeys. You’ll pass the famous Fig Tree Arch before ascending to Miriakamba Hut, nestled in a clearing with views of the crater rim.
Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

The trail steepens as you climb through the heath and moorland zone, with giant heathers and lobelias lining the path. You’ll pass Elephant Ridge and enjoy panoramic views of the crater and the Ash Cone. Saddle Hut sits between the summit and Little Meru, offering a stunning vantage point. In the afternoon, take an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m) for spectacular sunset views.
Saddle Hut โ Summit โ Miriakamba Hut

Summit day begins at midnight. You’ll climb steeply through rocky terrain to Rhino Point and then along the crater rim โ a thrilling section with some scrambling. As dawn breaks, you’ll reach the summit (4,566m) with breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro floating above the clouds. After celebrating, descend to Saddle Hut for brunch, then continue down to Miriakamba Hut for a well-earned rest.
Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate

After a relaxed breakfast, descend through the lush montane forest back to Momella Gate. Keep an eye out for wildlife on the way down โ the morning is often the best time for spotting animals. At the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate and say farewell to your guide and ranger. Transfer back to Arusha or Moshi for onward plans.
