Serengeti National Park

Witness the Greatest Wildlife Spectacle on Earth across endless plains that stretch to the horizon.

Overview

The Serengeti is Tanzania's most iconic national park and one of the most celebrated wildlife sanctuaries on the planet. Spanning 14,763 square kilometers of savannah, riverine forest, and kopjes, the name itself comes from the Maasai word "siringet" meaning "endless plains." This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to the Great Migration, where over two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles traverse the ecosystem in a perpetual cycle of life and death. The park is divided into distinct regions, each offering a different safari experience. The Southern Plains around Ndutu are famous for the calving season from January to March, when thousands of wildebeest give birth on the short-grass plains. The Western Corridor follows the Grumeti River, where massive Nile crocodiles await the migrating herds between May and July. The Northern Serengeti, near the Mara River, hosts the most dramatic river crossings from August to October. Beyond the migration, the Serengeti offers year-round wildlife viewing that is unmatched anywhere in Africa. The Seronera Valley in the central Serengeti is a permanent home to large populations of lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, and buffaloes. The park boasts the highest concentration of large predators on the continent, making every game drive an adventure. Accommodation ranges from authentic mobile tented camps that follow the migration to luxurious permanent lodges perched on kopjes overlooking the plains. Whether you choose a budget camping safari or a fly-in luxury experience, the Serengeti delivers an unforgettable encounter with wild Africa.

Wildlife & Attractions

The Serengeti is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino) plus cheetah, wildebeest (over 1.5 million), zebra (300,000+), Thomson's gazelle, Grant's gazelle, topi, eland, hartebeest, impala, giraffe, hippo, Nile crocodile, spotted hyena, African wild dog, bat-eared fox, serval cat, and over 500 bird species including the lilac-breasted roller, secretary bird, and Kori bustard.
