Safari Overview

This eleven-day adventure combines the challenge and triumph of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with the relaxation and cultural richness of Zanzibar. It is the ultimate active holiday for those who want to push their limits on the mountain and then reward themselves with tropical island bliss. The Kilimanjaro portion follows the seven-day Machame Route, widely considered the most scenic path to Uhuru Peak. Over seven days, you ascend through five distinct climate zones, from lush rainforest through alpine desert to the glacial summit at 5,895 meters. Your experienced mountain team includes guides, porters, and a cook who prepare fresh meals at each camp. The support, encouragement, and expertise of your crew are a key factor in summit success. After descending Kilimanjaro, a transfer to Arusha and a short flight to Zanzibar deliver you to the Spice Island, where four days of beach time await. Sink into a lounger on Nungwi or Kendwa beach, explore the atmospheric streets of Stone Town, join a spice plantation tour, or take a dhow cruise to Mnemba Atoll for world-class snorkeling. The contrast between the icy summit of Kilimanjaro and the warm turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean makes this combination genuinely unforgettable.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Arrive at Machame Gate on the southern slope of Mount Kilimanjaro, register with the park authorities, and begin your trek through the lush montane rainforest. The trail winds beneath a canopy of moss-draped trees alive with birdsong and the chatter of colobus monkeys. After approximately six hours of hiking, emerge from the forest at Machame Camp, where your crew has prepared tents and a hot meal at 3,000 meters above sea level.
Accommodation: Machame Camp (3,000m)
Meals: 1, 1, 1
After breakfast, continue ascending through the last stretches of forest before entering the heath and moorland zone, characterized by giant heather and surreal lobelia plants. The trail offers increasingly expansive views of the surrounding plains far below. Arrive at Shira Camp on the Shira Plateau at 3,840 meters, a vast alpine desert with stunning views of Kibo Peak and the Western Breach rising dramatically to the north.
Accommodation: Shira Camp (3,840m)
Meals: 1, 1, 1
Trek across the Shira Plateau and ascend toward Lava Tower at 4,630 meters, an important acclimatization point. After reaching the tower, descend steeply to Barranco Camp at 3,960 meters, following the crucial climb-high-sleep-low strategy that maximizes your chances of reaching the summit. The Great Barranco Wall looms above your camp, and the evening views of the glacier-capped Kibo summit are extraordinary.
Accommodation: Barranco Camp (3,960m)
Meals: 1, 1, 1
Begin the day with the exciting scramble up the Barranco Wall, a non-technical but exhilarating rock scramble that is one of the most memorable sections of the Machame Route. From the top of the wall, enjoy panoramic views before traversing through a series of valleys and ridges to reach Karanga Camp at 3,995 meters. This shorter hiking day allows additional time for rest and acclimatization before the final push.
Accommodation: Karanga Camp (3,995m)
Meals: 1, 1, 1
Ascend from Karanga Camp through increasingly barren alpine desert to Barafu Camp, your summit base camp at 4,673 meters. The air is noticeably thinner and the landscape lunar in its stark beauty. Arrive by midday, eat an early dinner, and rest in your tent as your guides brief you on the midnight summit attempt. The lights of Moshi twinkle far below as anticipation builds for the most challenging and rewarding night of your life.
Accommodation: Barafu Camp (4,673m)
Meals: 1, 1, 1
Wake at midnight and begin the summit push under a sky blazing with stars. Climb steadily through the darkness up the scree slopes toward Stella Point on the crater rim at 5,756 meters, then traverse the crater edge to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa at 5,895 meters. After celebrating at the summit, descend back to Barafu for a rest and meal, then continue down to Mweka Camp at 3,100 meters through alpine desert and moorland.
Accommodation: Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Meals: 1, 1, 1
Descend from Mweka Camp through the montane rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate and say farewell to your mountain crew. The descent takes approximately three hours through misty forest alive with birdsong. Transfer to Arusha and check in to your hotel, where a hot shower and comfortable bed feel like the greatest luxuries on earth after a week on the mountain.
Accommodation: Arusha Hotel
Meals: 1, 1, 1
Transfer to Arusha Airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight to Zanzibar, the legendary Spice Island of the Indian Ocean. After the physical challenge of Kilimanjaro, the warm turquoise waters and white-sand beaches of Zanzibar are the perfect reward. Arrive and transfer to your beachfront resort, where you can immediately feel the stress of the summit melt away with your first swim in the warm Indian Ocean.
Accommodation: Zanzibar Beach Resort
Meals: 1, 1, 1
Spend the morning relaxing on the beach and recovering from your Kilimanjaro adventure. In the afternoon, take a guided tour of Stone Town, the UNESCO World Heritage historic quarter of Zanzibar City. Wander the labyrinthine alleyways, visit the former slave market, admire the ornately carved wooden doors, and soak in the atmosphere of this ancient trading port where African, Arab, Indian, and European cultures have blended for centuries.
