Overview
Arusha National Park is one of Tanzania's most underrated gems, a small but strikingly beautiful park that encompasses an extraordinary variety of landscapes within its 552 square kilometers. Located just 32 kilometers from Arusha city, the park wraps around Mount Meru, Tanzania's second-highest mountain at 4,566 meters, and includes crater lakes, montane forest, and open grasslands. The park is divided into three distinct areas. The Ngurdoto Crater, sometimes called the "little Ngorongoro," is a three-kilometer-wide caldera with a swampy floor that can be observed from the rim but not entered. The Momella Lakes are a series of shallow alkaline lakes that attract large numbers of flamingos and other waterbirds. And the slopes of Mount Meru rise through bands of forest and moorland to a spectacular summit that offers views of Kilimanjaro on clear mornings. Wildlife in Arusha National Park includes buffalo, giraffe, hippo, a variety of monkeys (black-and-white colobus and blue monkey are commonly seen), warthog, bushbuck, and over 400 bird species. The forest areas are particularly rewarding for birdwatchers and photographers. While the park does not have lions, it offers a peaceful and scenic safari experience that contrasts well with the more intense game viewing of larger parks. Arusha National Park is perfect for day trips from Arusha, walking safaris (one of the few parks where walking is the primary activity), canoeing on the Momella Lakes, and as the starting point for a multi-day trek up Mount Meru. It is an excellent first-day activity for travelers arriving in Arusha before heading out on longer safari or Kilimanjaro expeditions.
